Head-to-head comparison

LALUX vs Foyer vs AXA vs Baloise:
The Differences That Matter

Five verified differences sourced from the official Insurance Product Information Documents — the ones that produce materially different outcomes when you make a claim.

⚡ In summary

The five verified differences between Luxembourg's four licensed car insurers are: (1) Driver protection — Baloise includes it in all plans; the others charge extra. (2) Glass cover scope — LALUX explicitly covers headlights and mirrors; the others say "verify conditions". (3) Emergency taxi — AXA includes a Joker Taxi in all three plans; the others price it as an option or pack. (4) Bonus protection — LALUX Performance includes it with a free three-year Joker; this combination is unique on the market. (5) Repair garage freedom — Foyer moov requires partner garages; LALUX, AXA and Baloise impose no restriction.

Five Verified Differences Between the Insurers

Each difference is drawn from the publicly available product information documents of the four CAA-licensed insurers.

1

Driver Personal Accident Protection — Included by Baloise Only

Third-party liability (RC) covers the people you injure — it does not cover you as the driver. If you cause an accident and are injured, you receive nothing from RC alone. This gap is filled by the "conducteur protégé" guarantee, which covers your bodily injury, temporary disability, permanent disability and death. Baloise Drive Essentielle includes this in every plan — the only insurer to do so. At LALUX, Foyer mobilé and AXA, driver protection is a paid option. The difference can amount to several hundred euros per year and represents the highest-impact coverage gap for an unaware buyer.

Glass Coverage Scope — Headlights and Mirrors Explicit at LALUX

All four insurers include glass breakage in their Mini Casco tiers, but the scope differs. LALUX easyPROTECT explicitly lists in its official guarantee table windscreen, sun visors, panoramic roof, external mirrors, and headlights including xenon. This is verifiable in the published IPID. Foyer, AXA and Baloise do not specify headlights or mirrors in their IPID documents, so the scope must be verified in the full policy conditions. On modern vehicles, xenon, LED or matrix headlight replacement costs €400 to €1,500 or more per unit, which makes the difference in scope financially meaningful.

Emergency Taxi Service — AXA Includes Joker Taxi in All Plans

When you cannot drive — following an accident, an evening with alcohol, a medical episode, or lost glasses — AXA OptiDrive includes a Joker Taxi service covering return-to-home transport for all vehicle occupants. This benefit is included in all three AXA tiers: Active, Active + Mini Casco, and Privilège. At LALUX, a comparable LALUX Taxi service (three return journeys) is a paid option. At Baloise, taxi cover is part of an optional Mobilité pack. Foyer does not offer an equivalent service in either product line.

Casco Bonus Protection — Unique Combination at LALUX Performance

Luxembourg has a separate DM (Dégâts Matériels) bonus-malus scale for Casco coverage, set freely by each insurer. An at-fault Casco claim typically raises the DM degree, which increases the Casco premium. LALUX Performance bundles two protections that are not combined elsewhere: a bonus protection clause (one at-fault Casco claim does not increase the DM degree) and an automatic Joker that resets for free after three consecutive claim-free years. Foyer mobilé Zen and Baloise offer bonus protection as an optional feature or pack, but neither includes the automatic three-year Joker reset. AXA offers options on a case-by-case basis.

Repair Garage Freedom — Foyer moov Requires Partner Garages

After a covered claim, Foyer moov (Silver and Gold tiers) requires repairs to be carried out at a Foyer partner garage. This is the explicit condition in the Foyer moov IPID. While partner-garage networks are typically well distributed, this restriction removes the ability to use a brand dealership, a trusted independent mechanic, or a specialised shop (for example, for rare or classic vehicles). LALUX, AXA, Baloise and Foyer mobilé impose no garage restriction — you choose where the car is repaired.

Compare FAQ

Is LALUX or AXA better for car insurance in Luxembourg?

LALUX Performance outperforms AXA Privilège on Casco depth: bonus protection and an auto-reset Joker are included at no extra cost, marten and fuel-error damage are explicitly confirmed in the IPID, and the Réparation Plus clause adds 10% to near-write-off payouts. AXA OptiDrive beats LALUX on two specific points: the Joker Taxi is included in all three AXA tiers (LALUX charges extra), and AXA offers a per-kilometre pricing option that saves money for drivers covering under 10,000 km per year. Choose LALUX for maximum Casco; choose AXA if mileage is low.

Does Baloise car insurance include driver accident protection in Luxembourg?

Yes — Baloise is the only Luxembourg car insurer to include driver personal accident protection in its standard Essentielle plan. This covers your own bodily injury, disability and death in an at-fault accident, at no additional cost. LALUX, Foyer mobilé and AXA all require this to be added as a paid option. The annual cost of driver protection as an option typically ranges from €50 to €150 depending on coverage level — a meaningful saving if Baloise's premium is otherwise competitive for your profile.

Does Foyer moov require using a specific garage for repairs?

Yes. Foyer moov Silver and Gold require all covered repairs to be done at a Foyer partner garage. This is explicitly stated in the Foyer moov IPID. The mobilé product line (Essentiel, Clima, Protection, Zen) imposes no such restriction. LALUX, AXA and Baloise all allow free choice of repair workshop. If you prefer to use your car's dealership or a trusted independent mechanic, choose mobilé or another insurer instead.

What is the difference between LALUX Sécurité, Confort and Performance?

Sécurité (entry): RC, 24/7 Top Assistance and a 5-day replacement vehicle, but fire, theft and glass require two optional packs. Confort: adds all Mini Casco guarantees as standard (fire, theft, glass, natural forces, animal collision), plus a 15-day accident replacement vehicle and a 35-day theft vehicle. Performance: full Casco tier adding at-fault accident damage, vandalism, marten/fuel/tyre damage, bonus protection, a free Joker that resets every three clean years, a 60-day replacement vehicle on theft, and the Réparation Plus clause adding 10% near write-off.
